I have held this view for a while. To me an application is a collection of services provided by a single system to fullfil a cohesive set of use cases. For example, a Point of Sale application is an aspect of a greater system for product order, delivery, and billing. However, you invariably have to look at the system as as whole when requirements change. You can't change the order-entry application without considering impact to the product delivery or billing systems. The glue is usually the data/information model, which is reflected in the database, object model, inter-(sub)system messaging, and UI.
