It's not just CVS, Dude

We've had a subscription with a CVS/Subversion hosting provider for a good while now, and though we don't seem to have much time to work on our side projects, when we have needed help, they have been very easy to work with, and the service has been great. They recently sent out an email looking for programmers and suggesting that their current brand name feels limiting. I am include the message in its entirety (with permission), in case any of you have any ideas for new names or Perl hacker friends (or selves) that you want to recommend:

We hope this finds you at a busy and productive time in your work and year! Here at CVSDude we are going through some exciting times ourselves. First, we recently hired new staff who will be working hard to provide you with more bang for your buck! In fact, we are currently hiring talented Perl developers. If you know anyone who might be interested in working for a growing software company based in Brisbane, Australia, please refer them to markb (at) cvsdude . com. and we'll pay you a USD$500 referral fee if we hire them!

Secondly, we are redesigning the look and feel of the website and the internal project management pages. If you have complaints, suggestions, or ideas that you would like to see implemented, please feel free to send through your comments and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Finally, we think that the name "CVSDude" is a bit limiting. We obviously offer more than CVS, and will soon introduce new, easier ways for you to collaborate and manage your projects. We are hesitant to let go of the word "dude" (clearly our most recognizable attribute), but are open to all ideas. So we would like to invite you to send us your suggestions for CVSDude's new name! Atlas becomes ASP.NET AJAX

Microsoft has updated the ATAS framework to use its official name: ASP.NET AJAX.  The new name isn't as clever, but should clear up the confusion about what it is for those in the .NET periphery. 

Also, word is that the updates break existing code.  So, you'll have to repair when you get the latest version from Microsoft downloads.

Windows Live OneCare 1.5 blocks VPN

It seems the Windows Live OneCare v1.5 beta hamstrings Microsoft PPTP VPN connections on various operating systems.  A patch is in testing and should be out in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time, you can get around it by turning off the WLOC Firewall feature. 

Windows Vista News

Windows Vista RC2 was released this past weekend.  For those with  B2 or RC1, you can update over the top of your existing installation with the same product key.  The new build is 5744.

Yesterday I received an email from the OneCare Beta team.  Windows Live OneCare v1.5 Beta is now available and it works with any Vista build RC1 or newer.  It seems to be working fine with my RC2 installation on my laptop.

I've been doing some .NET DirectoryServices development and need to verify somethings using a simple LDAP lookup.  Vista doesn't come with the standard Support/Tools that Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 did.  So I couldn't find a copy of LDP.exe.  Moreover, you can't install the support tools that come with XP.  It turns out that you need to install from the Windows Server 2003 disc/image.  You get a warning, but it runs fine in Windows Vista.
